How Long Does a Small Tattoo Last?

Level of detail. Cramming too much detail into a 3cm area means those details blur together over the years. In a small tattoo, simplicity is a technical requirement, not just an aesthetic preference.

Sun exposure. The biggest enemy. UV directly fades ink. Applying SPF regularly to tattoos in sun-exposed areas after healing noticeably extends how long they stay sharp.

A well-done small tattoo with good aftercare stays clear for years. Touch-ups are always an option if needed — that's part of maintenance, not a flaw.

How Is Size Decided?

"Small tattoo" means a different measurement to everyone. In practice, it breaks down like this:

2-4 cm: Minimal symbols, single letters, small moon/star shapes, dot work

4-7 cm: The most common range — small flowers, short lettering, minimal animal figures

7-10 cm: Detailed small designs, compositions

The design determines the size, not preference. Every design has a minimum size: lines and gaps can't sit closer than a certain distance, or they'll merge together over the years. If the design you have in mind doesn't hold up well at 3cm, your artist will suggest either sizing it up or simplifying it.
