Piercing healing times are the first thing you should know before getting any piercing. How long does each area take to heal? Why do some piercings heal in weeks while others take months? At Bosphorus Ink, we provide professional piercing services at our Istanbul Beşiktaş and Pendik studios with personalised healing support for every client. This complete guide covers piercing healing times for every body area along with essential aftercare advice.
Factors That Affect Piercing Healing Time
Piercing healing time doesn't depend solely on the body area. Your overall health, immune system, diet, sleep patterns, and daily physical activity levels all directly influence the process. Additionally, the type of tissue (soft tissue, cartilage, or mucous membrane), jewellery quality, and adherence to aftercare are all determining factors.
Cartilage tissue heals much more slowly than soft tissue due to reduced blood circulation. Mucous membrane areas like the mouth and tongue heal surprisingly quickly thanks to their rich blood supply. Implant-grade titanium is the safest jewellery choice during piercing healing. The Association of Professional Piercers (APP) also recommends implant-grade titanium as the standard initial jewellery material.
Ear Piercing Healing Times

The ear is the most popular piercing area, and its different locations have vastly different healing times.
Earlobe: 6-8 weeks
As soft tissue, this is one of the fastest healing piercing types and the most recommended area for a first piercing at our Istanbul studio.
Helix (upper ear cartilage): 6-12 months
Piercing healing time is significantly longer due to cartilage. Avoid sleeping on the pierced side throughout the healing period.
Tragus: 6-12 months
Placed on the small cartilage flap in front of the ear canal. Earphone use should be monitored carefully during piercing healing.
Conch: 6-12 months
Divided into inner and outer conch. As a cartilage piercing, patience is required and unnecessary contact should be avoided.
Daith: 6-12 months
Placed in the inner cartilage fold just above the ear canal. Limit earphone use throughout the piercing healing period.
Rook: 6-12 months
Placed on the inner cartilage ridge of the ear. Piercing healing time may vary depending on individual anatomy.
Industrial: 6-12 months
A long bar connecting two separate cartilage points. As a double-puncture piercing, aftercare must be particularly thorough.
Nose Piercing Healing Times

Nostril: 3-6 months
One of the most popular facial piercings in Istanbul. Stud jewellery enables faster nose piercing healing than rings as it moves less. Take care when dressing and washing your face.
Septum: 6-8 weeks
Placed in the thin soft tissue area (sweet spot) at the lower nasal septum — not cartilage — so piercing healing is faster than expected. Its protected position adds resilience. For a full overview of nose piercings, see our Nose Piercing Istanbul guide.
Bridge: 8-12 weeks
A surface piercing placed on the upper nose bridge between the eyes. Rejection risk is higher than other piercings.
Mouth and Lip Piercing Healing Times
Tongue: 4-6 weeks
Thanks to rich blood circulation, tongue piercing healing is one of the fastest in the body. Ready to get pierced? Visit our Istanbul piercing studio. Swelling is common the first week — eat soft, lukewarm foods, avoid spicy and acidic foods, and rinse with alcohol-free mouthwash 2-3 times daily.
Lip (Labret): 6-8 weeks
Placed below the lower lip. Monitor that the jewellery doesn't rub against teeth and gums during healing.
Medusa (Philtrum): 8-12 weeks
Placed in the cupid's bow above the upper lip. Extra care is needed while eating and drinking.
Monroe / Madonna: 8-12 weeks
Placed on the right or left side of the upper lip. Requires similar aftercare to a labret piercing.
Body Piercing Healing Times
Navel: 6-12 months
One of the longest piercing healing times. Constant waist movement and clothing friction slow healing. Get expert advice at our professional piercing studio in Istanbul. Avoid tight clothes and high-waisted trousers. No swimming for at least 4-6 weeks.
Nipple: 6-12 months
Patience is essential for this sensitive area. Wear loose, soft clothing and avoid unnecessary jewellery contact.
Surface piercings: 6-12 months or longer
Nape, collarbone, or wrist surface piercings carry a higher rejection risk. Regular check-ups and meticulous aftercare are essential.
General Aftercare Rules

Clean the piercing area twice daily with sterile saline solution. Do not rotate, pull, or unnecessarily touch the jewellery. Always wash your hands before touching. Avoid pools, sea, hammams, and saunas throughout the piercing healing period. Keep makeup, perfume, and chemicals away. Only change jewellery after the piercing healing process is fully complete, in a professional environment.
If you notice excessive redness, swelling, fever, yellow-green discharge, or intense pain, consult a healthcare professional immediately. For proper aftercare guidance, refer to the APP Piercing Aftercare Guide.
