The ear is the most pierced area of the body — but there's no single "ear piercing." Helix, tragus, daith, industrial and conch are just a few of the dozens of distinct points, each with its own pain level, healing time and aftercare needs. Choosing the right spot matters for both aesthetics and health.

Drawing on the experience of our team, who have performed thousands of piercings in Istanbul since 2021, we've gathered everything you need to know about the most popular ear piercing types, healing times and aftercare details.

The Most Popular Ear Piercing Types

Helix piercing: placed on the upper outer curve of the ear cartilage. One of the most requested spots, done alone or in multiple combinations. Healing typically takes 3-6 months (see our piercing healing times guide for a detailed breakdown).

Tragus piercing: placed on the small cartilage bump in front of the ear canal. Popular for its subtle yet noticeable look; healing can take 4-8 months.

Daith piercing: passes through the innermost fold of the ear cartilage. One of the most technically demanding spots both aesthetically and practically, requiring 6-9 months to heal and an experienced piercer.

Industrial piercing: connects two separate helix points with a single barbell, making it one of the most striking combinations. Because two points must heal simultaneously, the process takes longer: 6-12 months.

Conch piercing: placed in the middle cartilage area of the ear; can be done with a small stud or a larger hoop. Healing takes around 6-9 months.

Cartilage vs. Soft Tissue: The Pain Difference

Earlobe piercings are done on soft tissue, making them relatively less painful, and they heal within 6-8 weeks. Cartilage piercings like helix, tragus, daith, industrial and conch create more pressure sensation and take much longer to heal. Because cartilage has less blood flow, infection risk is comparatively higher — which is why proper aftercare is essential.

Ear Piercing Aftercare: What You Need to Know

Cleaning: gently clean with sterile saline solution once or twice a day. Avoid harsh products like alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.

Don't touch: unnecessarily twisting or touching the piercing delays healing and increases infection risk.

Pillowcases and hair: cartilage piercings are vulnerable to being caught while sleeping; avoid sleeping on the pierced side during the first months.

Jewelry changes: don't remove the initial jewelry before healing is complete. Changing it too early can cause the channel to close or become inflamed.

Which Symptoms Are Normal, Which Are Concerning?

Mild redness, swelling and clear or yellowish discharge are normal in the first days. However, intense pain, greenish foul-smelling discharge, persistent swelling or fever can signal infection and require professional evaluation (see our piercing keloid guide).

Why Choosing the Right Studio Matters

Cartilage piercings, especially technical spots like daith and industrial, require an experienced piercer. Single-use needles, certified jewelry materials (surgical steel, titanium or gold) and a sterile environment both speed up healing and reduce complication risk.
